May is Older Americans Month
Published on May 13, 2021
May has been proclaimed Older Americans Month by the Board of County Commissioners in recognition and appreciation of the growing number of older Americans who make countless contributions to the community.
“One of the greatest generations, older Americans are tough and resilient. I am always so grateful; they have made this country what it is today,” said Perry Buck Commissioner Coordinator for the Department of Human Services. “I have to say what an honor and privilege it is to serve older individuals and work alongside our Area Agency on Aging.”
Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is a program designated for the older population of Weld County to turn to for resources and involvement. During the COVID-19 pandemic, AAA successfully converted in person meal sites at various community centers throughout the county to drive-thrus, while being able to continually serve those who relied on these sites for not only meals but socialization as well. From March 2020 to October 2020 a total of 20,827 meals were served at these sites. AAA also dropped off more than 400 care packages which contained weighted blankets, playing cards and more to senior housing facilities and to the homes of aging adults.
“We want to give a huge shout-out to our staff in the Area Agency on Aging for all their hard work and dedication to supporting older Americans in our community,” said Department of Human Services Director Jamie Ulrich. “These staff members truly have a passion for the work that they do, and it is evident every single day.”
Older Americans Month was first designated by President John F. Kennedy in 1963 as Senior Citizen Month. This year’s theme, deemed by the Administration for Community Living, is ‘Communities of Strength’.
This May we celebrate the strength of older adults and the aging network, with emphasis on the power of connection and engagement in continuing to build the strength we see in Weld County.
