The first stage of roundabout construction in the High Plains Boulevard project will result in the temporary closure of Weld County Road (WCR) 34 between the east I-25 frontage road and WCR 13. It was approved last week by the Weld County Board of Commissioners and will begin Oct. 20 and go through Dec. 22. Detours can be viewed on the Weld County Road Advisory Map.

Although the construction of the county’s portion of High Plains Boulevard — WCR 9.5 from WCR 32 to 34 — has been underway for several months, the start of roundabout construction marks one of the first major milestones in the project.

“One of the primary motivating factors for the construction of High Plains Boulevard is to provide another safe and efficient north and south route throughout a busy and growing portion of the county. Roundabouts help us do that,” said Jason Maxey, Weld County Commissioner and Commissioner Coordinator of public works.

Full construction of the roundabout will be implemented in phases. Much of the work during this initial 10-week closure will center around utility installations and box culvert installations, which will assist with drainage. Access to homes and businesses within the closure will be maintained.

“Just as our other county roundabouts were built to reduce the likelihood of broadside accidents and increase the efficiency of traffic flow, we expect the ones planned for High Plains Boulevard to do the same,” said Curtis Hall, Director of the Weld County Department of Public Works. “We appreciate the public’s patience as we work to deliver this enhancement, which we believe will be a great asset toward moving traffic safely and efficiently through High Plains Boulevard and the WCR 34 intersection when they’re complete.”

This roundabout is one of two planned for the county’s portion of High Plains Boulevard — the other will be placed at the WCR 32 intersection. The roundabouts are a collaborative effort. Kraemer North America is constructing the county’s portion of High Plains Boulevard, including the roundabouts. Public works is managing the project, and the Town of Mead, which is constructing High Plains Boulevard from WCR 34 to WCR 36, has contributed $635,000 to the effort. The funds will assist with the costs of making the driving surface of each roundabout concrete as opposed to asphalt, a feature that can help them achieve a 30-year lifespan before major repairs may be needed.
