Hantavirus

Hantavirus is spread through contact with the rodent feces, urine, or saliva. It can spread by inhaling airborne droplets, touching contaminated surfaces then touching your face, eating contaminated food, or rodent bites.  In Weld County, Hantavirus is mainly spread by deer mice but can be found in other rodents.

Prevention:

  • Avoid exposure to mouse droppings and mouse-infested areas
  • Seal holes or openings into your home
  • Store food and garbage in rodent-proof containers
  • Remove hiding places such as boxes, newspaper, and wood piles
  • Use rodent traps for infestations
  • When camping, avoid sleeping on the bare ground
