Plague

Plague is spread mainly through flea bites and direct contact with infected animals.  In Weld County, Plague has been found in rodents such as prairie dogs, squirrels, and rabbits. 

Prevention?

  • Avoid sick and dead rodents.
  • Do not feed rodents near your home.
  • Do not attempt to catch or play with rodents.
  • Keep pets from roaming in suspected plague areas.
  • Keep up to date on flea and tick prevention for household pets. 
  • Clear rodent habitats or debris.
  • When hiking, camping, or moving through dense brush - wear high boots, long pants, and shirts, and treat clothing with insect repellent.

Report Any Concerns:

Rodents, such as prairie dogs, are especially susceptible to plague.  Call WCDPHE at (970) 400-2290 to report any unusual animal die-offs.
