Plague

Plague is a spread mainly through flea bites and direct contact with infected animals.  In Weld County, Plague has been found in rodents such as prairie dogs, squirrels, and rabbits. 

Prevention?

  • Avoid sick and dead rodents.
  • Do not feed rodents near your home.
  • Do not attempt to catch or play with rodents.
  • Keep pets from roaming in suspected plague areas.
  • Keep up to date on flea and tick prevention for household pets. 
  • Clear rodent habitats or debris.
  • When hiking, camping, or moving through dense brush - wear high boots, long pants, and shirts, and treat clothing with insect repellent.

Report Any Concerns:

Wild carnivores and cats are especially susceptible to plague, if you experience a bite from these animals contact WCDPHE at 970-400-2290.  Call this same number to report any unusual animal die-offs.
