The Strengthening Families Program (SFP 10–14) is an evidence-based program that helps families build stronger relationships, improve communication, and support healthy development in youth ages 10 to 14. This seven-week program includes weekly two-hour sessions. Parents and youth first meet in separate groups for skill-building activities and then come together for family sessions to reinforce learning, practice problem-solving, and strengthen family bonds. Research has consistently shown that SFP 10–14 reduces the risk of youth substance use, improves family functioning, and enhances academic success.
Youth are less likely to use alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and other drugs; problem behaviors such as aggression and delinquency are reduced; youth are more engaged in school and parents are less distracted at work; and the need for substance use treatment and law enforcement involvement are reduced.
A research study conducted by the Partnerships and Prevention Science Institute found that for every $1 spent on SFP 10-14, communities see a return of $9.60 in long-term benefits. In Weld County, funding for the program is provided by the Weld County Health Department and various grants so families can participate at no cost. Similar findings come from a cost benefit analysis conducted by the Washington State Institute for Public Policy which estimated SFP 10-14 generates approximately $5,923 in savings per youth. This means the savings to the community outweigh the cost of running the program. These savings are shown in youth having reduced involvement in the criminal justice system, fewer special education needs, lower health care costs, decreased alcohol use, and higher future earnings.
The Weld County Health Department is hosting two sessions in October to help strengthen families using the SFP 10-14 framework.
