Weld Area Agency on Aging - Advisory Board Meeting Minutes

  2. Approval of Minutes:  

    • Member Hart motioned to approve the minutes from March 12, 2026.  Member Quade seconded.   All approved.
  3. Programs:

    • Weld County Focus Group Discussion – Improvements to the Weld County Website
      • Easy to navigate through the pages on both the computer and phone.
      • Adding information and search option for Medicare and Medicaid.
      • Designed to accommodate individuals with disabilities as well as a screen reader.
      • Translates into over a hundred languages.
    • Introduction to Aspen Club - Lynda McCullough, Community Health Educator
      • The Aspen Club began in 1990 and is open to anyone 50 or older in Northern Colorado by completing an application for membership that includes:
        • Bi-Monthly Newsletter
        • Health and Wellness Education and Promotion
        • Disease Prevention Strategies
        • Caregiver Education and Resources
        • Fall Prevention Programs and Services
        • Older Adult Safety and Independence
        • Assistance in Completing Advance Directives
        • Medicare Counseling
        • Health Coaching & Screenings
        • Community Connections and Partner Referrals
    • Q:  Member Karcher – Most people have patterns of living; how do you help people change those patterns?
      • A:   Guest McCullough – It goes in depth for those that have mental health challenges and takes people that are motivated to make the change.
    • Q:  Member Hart – How is the Aspen Club funded?
      • A:   Guest McCullough – Through UCHealth Foundation and grants.
      • S:  Commissioner Buck – Hospitals treat after the fact, whereas the Aspen Club focuses on teaching people how to take care of themselves to not end up in the hospital as well as how to get people in isolation out to get assistance with their overall wellbeing.
        • Staff Member Skoglund – The State Unit on Aging requested Weld County AAA to present on a panel about socialization and connection at the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day event at DU Campus. Weld County provides many opportunities and programs to encourage social connection. SUA provided statistics on social isolation, and Weld County had low ratings compared to other areas in the state.
    • Q:  Vice-Chair Ortiz – Are there any classes or presentations in Spanish?
      • A:   Guest McCullough – Presented at Rodarte for a year but currently does not have anyone to present that speaks Spanish.
    • Q:  Member Cure – Are there any classes to help adult children communicate with their parents?
      • A:   Guest McCullough – Listening with Curiosity program will group kids and seniors together to help them understand each other and get past stereotypes.  Health Department is working on intergenerational planning.
  4. Committee Reports

    • Nutrition:
      • Member Schunter – Would be happy to meet any other members at a meal site for a Friendly Fork meal.  Evening meals in Platteville will begin on June 2nd with a suggested donation of $5.00 a meal.   Please make a reservation 24 hours in advance if you would like to attend.
    • ADRC (Aging, Disability & Resource Center):
      • Member Leitel – Meet quarterly.  Nothing to report.
      • Staff Member Skoglund - Next quarterly meeting will be April 28th at Blue Mug on 59th Ave. Sophie O’Neal from Assistance Payments will present on Estate Recovery.
    • Fraud Updates:
      • Staff Member Roper – Nothing new to report.
    • Legislative & CCA: 
      • Division Director Morrison – Nothing to report back on yet.  Working on a guardianship bill.
    • 50+ Art Show:
      • Staff Member Skoglund – Applications are being mailed out to artists.  Event is at the LINC Library on September 23, 2026.   Art will be displayed for one month.
    • Beyond 60
      • Staff Member Skoglund – Articles, recipes, etc. around 350 words are always needed.
    • Monitoring, Oversight, Request for Proposal
      • Division Director Morrison – Preparing the 4-year plan as to what our community needs.
      • Staff Member Skoglund – Partnership with Ride United/Lyft has been going well. They have provided several rides for those who are unable to obtain rides through other services. They can call 211 or the AAA Information and Assistance Line to schedule a ride.
  5. Board Participation Reports:

    • Member Schunter – Recommends watching “I’m 87 and checked myself into a nursing home for 3 days”. 
    • Commissioner Buck – Recommended looking into co-op living.  There are 10 throughout the state of Colorado for anyone 62 and older.
    • Vice-Chair Ortiz – LINC Library has a resource fair every Wednesday from 12pm-2pm.  Housing, transportation, Medicare, Medicaid, applying for assistance, food back, etc.
