What Is Benefit Fraud in Colorado?

Benefit fraud in Colorado happens when someone lies or hides the truth on purpose to get public help they shouldn’t get.

These benefits are meant to help people who really need them. When someone commits fraud, it takes help away from others. Reporting fraud helps keep the system fair and makes sure support goes to the people who need it most.

How to Report Benefit Fraud

Reporting is private and easy.

File a report for Food Assistance (SNAP), Cash Assistance (Colorado Works/TANF & Adult Financial), Health First Colorado (Medicaid), or Child Care Assistance

Information needed when reporting fraud

When you report fraud, please give us this information if you have it:

  • The name of the person or group
  • The date the fraud happened
  • A clear explanation of why you think it’s fraud
  • Additional information if known
    • Their address
    • Their date of birth
    • Their Social Security Number (if you know it)
    • Where they work (name and address)
    • Who lives in their home

We try our best to keep your name private. But if the case goes to court and your information is needed, you might have to speak as a witness.

Common types of benefit fraud

  • Lying on your application: Giving false information or leaving out important facts to get benefits you shouldn’t have.
  • Hiding or not reporting income: Not telling about all the money you make from a job, side work, or cash payments, so it looks like you make less than you do.
  • Not listing everyone in your home: Leaving someone out to hide their income, which can lead to getting more benefits.
  • Hiding money or property: Not reporting all the money in your bank or things you own.
  • Selling your benefits: Trading your EBT card or benefits for cash or things you’re not allowed to buy.
  • Stealing benefits electronically: Using stolen card info, often taken with skimming devices, to use someone else’s benefits.
  • Applying in more than one state: Getting benefits in Colorado and another state at the same time.
  • Living in another state: Getting Colorado benefits while living somewhere else.
