Legislative Session

Colorado State Capitol

Weld County commissioners and department directors take an active role in the state's legislative process. Whether through testimony on bills or by proposing legislation, Weld County government works diligently to ensure the voices of Weld County residents are heard and considered at the state level.

When the 2026 legislative session begins in January, the public information and communications department will post the list of bills the county is following.

Each week during the session, commissioners, county elected officials, and department heads meet to discuss newly proposed bills and their impact on Weld County. Commissioners will take one of four positions on a proposed bill:

  • Support: Commissioners support the proposed bill as introduced.
  • Oppose: Commissioners oppose the proposed bill as introduced.
  • Amend: Commissioners would support the proposed bill if amendments were made, which would make the bill better suited for Weld County needs. Commissioners work with the county attorney, department heads and a hired lobbying firm to submit the proposed amendments.
  • Monitor: Commissioners agree to monitor the proposed bill as more information is gathered as to whether or not the proposed bill would have an impact on Weld County.
  • a new rating system was added to the county's matrix (paired with the position taken by the county). The 1, 2, or 3 that appears next to the position and introduction date is an indication by the commissioners as to the level of effort the county is putting toward its position.
  1. All hands on deck – the item is of utmost importance; heavy lobbying efforts will be put toward advocating for Weld County’s position on the bill.
  2. Support - lobbying efforts will be used to complement and support organizations such as Colorado Counties, Inc., or other government entities, in efforts advocating for Weld County’s and those entities’ position on the bill.
  3. Statement - the county has selected a position on the proposed bill but will not be directing lobbying efforts toward advocating Weld County’s position on the bill.
