What happened? (updated 4/13/25)

  • On April 6, 2025, at approximately 6 p.m. MST, a well control incident occurred at a Chevron well location near Galeton, CO.
  • On April 10, 2025, at approximately 3:30 p.m. MST, the well was contained and fluids were no longer being released from the well.
  • On April 11, 2025, the well was secured, meaning that it was successfully sealed.
  • On April 12, 2025, recovery efforts began.

 

 

What happened at the community meeting? (new 4/13/25)

  • On April 10, 2025, responding entities held a community meeting to share information about the incident and response activities.
  • Approximately 230 residents attended the meeting, where they received a response update and recovery plan and had the opportunity to ask questions and share concerns.
  • Subject matter experts from multiple entities engaged with the community to help address any questions. The response team will continue to reach out to those who had additional questions.

 

How did this incident begin? (updated 4/13/25)

  • It is too soon to pinpoint the exact cause of the incident. An investigation and thorough root-cause analysis will be conducted
  • Based on the limited information available now, it appears that during routine operations at one of the wells on Chevron’s Bishop site near Galeton, a failure of surface equipment resulted in the release of water, oil, and gas.

 

Was this a pipeline? Was it related to fracking? (new 4/13/25)

It did not take place during fracking and there was no pipeline failure. Chevron will communicate its findings upon completion of its investigation.

 

How long will it take to determine the cause of the incident with confidence? (updated 4/13/25)

  • A thorough analysis will begin once the immediate incident has been resolved and updates based on those findings will be communicated.
