October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, promote early detection, and support those affected by the disease. Updated guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force now recommend mammograms every other year for individuals age 40 and older.

To help ensure cost is never a barrier, the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment (WCDPHE) provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings through the Women’s Wellness Connection (WWC) program for eligible women aged 40 to 64. These screenings, which can detect potential issues early and connect patients to timely care and treatment, can be lifesaving.

“Regular screening can detect breast cancer early, when treatment is most effective,” said Cynthia Horn, Chief Nursing Officer of Weld County’s Public Health Services Division. “Early detection can significantly enhance the chances of successful treatment and long-term survival, so if you’re 40 or older, ask yourself: Are you up to date?

In addition to screenings, WCDPHE offers one-on-one health education, translation assistance, transportation coordination, dependent care support, and help with appointment scheduling and health insurance enrollment; all designed to reduce barriers and make preventive care more accessible to everyone.

If you or someone you know may be eligible for a free screening, contact Public Health Services at (970) 400-6420 or find out more about the Women’s Wellness Connection program at www.weld.gov/go/wwc.
