Nearly half of U.S. adults report feeling lonely or socially isolated, according to a recent U.S. Surgeon General’s advisory report. These feelings affect individuals across all ages and backgrounds and have been shown to negatively impact both mental and physical health.

Loneliness Awareness Week was founded in 2017 to help raise awareness of this widespread issue.  Last year, the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment, in collaboration with local partners, launched Acts of Connection — the county’s first community-wide campaign to combat loneliness and social isolation. The initiative was developed by members of the Healthy Mind and Spirit workgroup as part of Weld County’s Community Health Improvement Plan. Acts of Connection encourages residents to build meaningful relationships and foster a culture of connection throughout the community.

As part of the campaign, Acts of Connection will be hosting Connection Workshops across Weld County. These free, two-hour interactive sessions are designed for adults who may be experiencing loneliness or want to support someone who is. Participants will explore:

  • The importance of connection
  • How to recognize signs of loneliness
  • Practical strategies to build or rebuild social ties

The next Connection Workshop will be held on Thursday, June 26 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Caring Legacy Building – North Range Behavioral Health (2105 Clubhouse Drive, Greeley) with additional sessions to be announced in the coming weeks.
