County, state partner on future intersection improvements

Future safety improvements at the intersection of Colorado Highway 392 and the south leg of Weld County Road 27 got the green light Monday when the Weld County Board of Commissioners entered into an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
The IGA solidifies the county’s contribution of $5.2 million to CDOT to design and construct several improvements to the intersection east of Windsor, including a traffic signal and auxiliary lanes. Specifically, Highway 392 will be widened, and an auxiliary left-turn lane will be installed. WCR 27 improvements south of the highway involve widening the road to accommodate an auxiliary left-turn lane as well. Widening WCR 27 will also allow for the addition of 6-foot paved shoulders.
“During community meetings last year, we received consistent feedback about this intersection identifying a need to make it safer, which we’re excited to do through this agreement,” said Weld County Commissioner Kevin Ross, who served as chair in 2024. “Those concerns have been heard, and the commitment of these funds marks an important first step in the project.”
The improvements aim to reduce the risk of accidents at the intersection, which have climbed to a total of 40 between 2019 and 2023, according to the Weld County Department of Public Works. Approximately 11,470 vehicles pass through the intersection daily, which is in both CDOT and Weld County’s jurisdiction.
“As a department, we continually look for projects that we can complete in-house as well as opportunities to partner through grants and IGAs to make roads safer and more efficient,” said Curtis Hall, Director of the Weld County Department of Public Works. “This agreement is an important first step to improving a heavily used intersection.”
The start of actual construction is still being determined, though it’s likely a few years off. While CDOT will perform construction, it first must complete and finalize the design of the improvements before work can begin.
