June honors reunification superheroes who keep families together
Published on June 05, 2025
The Weld County board of commissioners proclaimed June as Reunification Month at the board meeting on June 2. This proclamation recognizes and celebrates families who have successfully reunified with their children, families currently working through the process, and the many support staff who help these families.
This year’s theme is “Reunification Superheroes,” highlighting the team effort involved in keeping families together.
Tami Grant, Department of Human Services (DHS) Deputy Director, noted that there are several elements to achieve the primary goal of reunifying children and families, including:
- Promoting authentic family engagement
- Integrating the voice of children, youth and families in the case planning and court processes
- Enhancing parent experiences when partnering with child welfare
- Developing and strengthening natural support networks
“As a result of the dedication of our team and partners alike, 56% of closed child welfare cases have resulted in reunification so far this year,” Grant said.
In 2024, 96% of child welfare investigations in Weld County were either closed or transferred to the permanency team — to achieve a permanent, stable living situation in which birth family connections are preserved while wraparound services are utilized — within 90 days of contact. Additionally, 64% of closed cases resulted in families achieving reunification after addressing areas of concern.
“Through hard work and the commitment to overcoming difficult life circumstances, families are able to reunify,” said Lynette Peppler, Commissioner Coordinator for DHS. “This month is an opportunity to celebrate these individuals, and to inspire other parents who may be currently navigating this process.”
To further celebrate the efforts of Weld County families, DHS staff and community members, a superhero-themed celebration will be held on Wednesday, June 18, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the LINC Library in Greeley.
