Additional paving improvement added to High Plains Boulevard project
Published on May 14, 2026
Approximately 1.3 miles of Weld County Road (WCR) 34 will receive new pavement as part of the construction of High Plains Boulevard — a combined effort between Weld County and the Town of Mead to build a new road east of Interstate 25. The paving addition was approved last week by the Weld County Board of Commissioners as part of a change order to the project.
“We understand construction and road closures can be an inconvenience. That’s why we always try to get as much done under one closure as possible,” said Scott James, Weld County Commissioner Chair. “We believe the traveling public will be happy with High Plains Boulevard, and the extra paving of WCR 34 only adds to that value.”
This additional work will see existing asphalt removed and new asphalt installed on WCR 34 starting at the east project limit of the High Plains Boulevard project extending east to WCR 13. Work is anticipated to begin in late June and will be in addition to the work Kraemer North America is completing to build the county’s portion of High Plains Boulevard (WCR 9.5) from WCR 32 to 34.
The repave of WCR 34 was intended to be done in 2025 by Weld County Public Works, but the right-of-way acquisition process related to High Plains Boulevard caused a delay. Kevin Ross, Weld County Commissioner Coordinator of Public Works, said completing the additional work during the High Plains Boulevard closure will minimize impacts to residents and businesses in the area.
“As county road 34 will be closed as part for construction of a new roundabout as part of the High Plains Boulevard project, this mill and overlay can be done at the same time, meaning additional closures and detours won’t be necessary,” Ross said. “This work will also not add any additional days to the contract for the High Plains Boulevard project.
“It’s really the best thing that can be done for travelers in the area.”
The WCR 34 repaving work is anticipated to last a couple of weeks once WCR 34 is closed. The overall High Plains Boulevard project is anticipated to be complete in the fall of this year.
