Grant to assist with resealing runway at airport

Federal funding will be used to help reseal runway 17/35 at the Greeley-Weld County Airport. Late last month, the Weld County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the Greeley-Weld County Airport Authority and City of Greeley, accepted two Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants, totaling a combined $435,000 for the project.

“As we improve the airport to handle larger planes and more traffic, it’s critical the airport’s runways can meet that demand,” said Kevin Ross, Weld County Commissioner and Chair of the Airport Authority. “We’re grateful to have the FAA’s support on this important maintenance project.”

Constructed in 1996 and opened in 2000, runway 17/35 is the largest of two at the airport. It is 10,000 feet long and 100 feet wide. Resealing the runway can help extend its life and lessen the need for a full replacement. Specifically, a reseal can:

  • Make the runway more resistant to moisture and cracking, particularly the effect of freeze-thaw.
  • Strengthen the runway’s pavement to handle greater traffic.
  • Provide a smoother landing service as well as overall runway that continues to meet FAA requirements.

“Throughout our overall effort to improve the airport, the FAA has been very supportive, and these grants are the latest example,” said Cooper Anderson, Director of the Greeley-Weld County Airport. “This maintenance will help the airport today and in the future as we grow.”

The FAA grants for the reseal project follow three others awarded to the airport in 2025. They were used to offset costs related to construction of the Echo and Bravo Taxiway Complex as well as major ramp reconstruction.
