Improvement project on Weld County Road 77 to resume April 13

Work on Weld County Road 77

The fourth phase of improvements to Weld County Road (WCR) 77 will begin in a few weeks, after the Weld County Board of Commissioners approved the temporary closure of the road from WCR 114 to WCR 122 on Monday. The closure will be in place from April 13 through Sept. 30, 2026. Detours can be viewed on the Weld County Road Advisory Map.

Since 2023, effort has been made to rebuild the road north of Briggsdale, with the focus on providing a stronger road structure and enhanced driving surface. The focus will be the same on this four-mile section of WCR 77, with the Weld County Department of Public Works strengthening the road’s structure through full-depth reclamation (FDR). FDR has been used by public works for several years as a way to strengthen and stabilize road base with cement and even recycle a portion of existing asphalt in the process.

“We’ve seen tremendous before-and-after improvement from the first 12 miles of county road 77 we’ve rebuilt, and we expect the same results with this portion,” said Curtis Hall, Director of the Weld County Department of Public Works. “This road is critical for residents in the northern part of Weld County as well as members of the oil and gas and agricultural industries.”

Similar to previous years, care has been taken to coordinate with school and fire districts in the area as well as the United States Postal Service. While the road will be closed for approximately five and half months, it will reopen temporarily for two important events:

  • The road will reopen at the end of the day on Friday, May 15, to accommodate traffic attending the graduation ceremony for the Pawnee School District. It will close again on Monday, May 18, at 6 a.m.

  • On Father’s Day weekend, the Earl Anderson Memorial Rodeo will be held in Grover. WCR 77 will reopen  at the end of the day on Thursday, June 18, to accommodate those attending the rodeo. It will close again on Monday, June 22 at 6 a.m.

“Throughout this lengthy project, our public works department has taken great care to ensure work doesn’t inconvenience those traveling to two major events in the area,” said Scott James, Weld County Commissioner Chair. “That same care is being taken this year, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to deliver this needed improvement.”

The project is the latest step in public works’ larger goal of rebuilding WCR 77 to WCR 136.
