This week, the Weld County Board of Commissioners entered into an intergovernmental agreement with Larimer County for construction of a roundabout at a heavily used intersection north of Johnstown. Construction at the intersection of Weld County Road 50 and Weld County Road 13  — Larimer County Road 1 and Larimer County Road 14 — is anticipated to begin in 2027.

“This is a mutually beneficial improvement serving Weld and Larimer residents alike, and we’re pleased to have financial support,” said Scott James, Weld County Commissioner Chair. “As growth continues in Weld County, projects like these will be necessary to ensure our transportation infrastructure continues to meet demand safely and efficiently.”

While Weld County is contributing the majority of the funds for the $14 million capital improvement project, Larimer County will reimburse the county $16,595, and the Town of Johnstown will contribute $2,626,472. In addition, the Colorado Department of Transportation has awarded the Weld County a Surface Transportation Block Grant, totaling more than $1.6 million, to support construction.

Nationwide, roundabouts reduce the likelihood of broadside accidents by as much as 78% versus a signalized intersection and up to 82% compared to a two-way stop, according to the Federal Highway Administration. A roundabout was identified as the best enhancement as traffic at the intersection is on the rise. Approximately 7,500 vehicles travel through the intersection every day, according to the Weld County Department of Public Works.

“This is one of our busier intersections, and just like we’ve seen with the roundabouts we’ve constructed over the past couple years, we anticipate this one having the same positive effect with regard to safety and efficiency and minimizing the delay to get through the intersection during times of peak traffic,” said Curtis Hall, Director of the Weld County Department of Public Works.

The project is currently in the design phase, with Weld County set to manage construction once it begins. Upon completion, the Town of Johnstown is expected to annex the intersection.

Construction will be completed by an outside contractor, chosen later. Information about closure dates and detours will be announced on the county’s Facebook and X platforms.
