Rebuild, paving to complete final phase of improvement project

The final phase of improvements to a 3-mile portion of Weld County Road (WCR) 29 is set to begin. The Weld County Board of Commissioners approved closing the road between WCR 74 and Colorado Highway 392 from Monday, July 20, through Friday, Oct. 30, while it is rebuilt and paved. Detours can be viewed on Weld County’s Road Advisory Map.
The rebuild of WCR 29 continues an effort to make the road — located west of Eaton — safer, stronger, and better able to stand up to the weight of large vehicles. Counts show 29% of the traffic on the road is heavy trucks, according to the Weld County Department of Public Works.
“It’s important that our roads safely and efficiently meet today’s needs as well as future demand,” said Scott James, Weld County Commissioner Chair. “This project will help county road 29 do both of those things.”
The road’s structure will be strengthened through the placement of a geogrid — a type of geosynthetic material placed between the soil and the road that makes it more resistant to cracking and rutting. The entire 3-mile portion of WCR 29 will also be paved. Coulson Excavating Company Inc. will complete construction of the $5.8 million improvement project. Weld County Public Works will serve as the project manager.
The project follows the replacement of 11 culverts along the road earlier this year. Three culverts were extended and an irrigation ditch was relocated as well. Work was also completed last year on a 4-mile section of WCR 29 between WCR 74 and Colorado Highway 14.
“This last bit of work on Weld County Road 29 will mark the end of an important project to residents near Eaton and throughout northern Weld County,” said Kevin Ross, Weld County Commissioner Coordinator of Public Works. “We appreciate the public’s patience and look forward to delivering these improvements.”
