Roundabout coming to intersection of county road 54 and county road 13

Kraemer North America LLC will build a roundabout at the intersection of Weld County Road (WCR) 54 and WCR 13. Last week, the company was awarded the project contract by the Weld County Board of Commissioners for $14,916,360.60.
The roundabout, identified as a capital improvement project by the Weld County Department of Public Works, is being constructed to enhance safety and efficiency at the busy intersection northeast of Johnstown. More than 10,000 vehicles use the intersection daily and, with broadside accidents a major concern, a roundabout was chosen as the best safety enhancement.
“In recent years, we’ve installed roundabouts at several similar intersections, and we’ve seen safer and improved traffic flow,” said Scott James, Weld County Commissioner Chair. “We expect similar results from this one.”
The features and design of this roundabout will be consistent with similar county-built ones in recent years, such as those at WCR 54 and WCR 17, completed in 2020 or at WCR 6 and WCR 13, completed in 2025. The lanes will be wide enough to accommodate regular vehicles as well as large trucks and agricultural equipment. Kraemer will construct the roundabout, and public works will serve as the project manager. Kraemer and public works are familiar with one another, as the two are currently working together to construct the county’s portion of High Plains Boulevard east of Interstate 25 near Mead.
While this is a county project, it does have state support as well. In 2023, Weld County entered into an intergovernmental agreement with the Colorado Department of Transportation, receiving a Surface Transportation Block Grant in the amount of $1,714,469. More than $1.4 million of the grant came from CDOT, with Weld County and Larimer County contributing the remaining amount — $265,060 and $30,000, respectively. Construction of the roundabout follows the implementation of stop signs at the intersection, which were installed in December of last year.
The project is anticipated to start this spring and be complete by late fall, although exact dates are still being determined. When finalized, the dates, as well as anticipated road closures and detours, will be announced on the county’s Facebook and X platforms.
