Weld County Commissioners proclaim January National Radon Action Month
Published on January 13, 2026
The Weld County Board of Commissioners has proclaimed January 2026 as National Radon Action Month in Weld County, highlighting the importance of radon testing and awareness during the winter season, when homes are typically sealed up and radon levels can be higher indoors.
Radon is a naturally occurring, colorless and odorless radioactive gas that can enter homes through cracks and openings in foundations. The only way to know a home’s radon level is to test.
“During those 20-plus years, we have distributed over 10,000 radon test kits to Weld County residents. And of those 10,000 homes that have been tested, approximately 50% have had elevated radon levels,” said Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment (WCDPHE) Programs Manager Gabri Vergara.
Radon exposure can be a serious public health concern. National Radon Action Month is intended to encourage residents to test for radon and take action if levels are elevated. Testing is quick and easy, and mitigation options are effective at reducing radon to safer levels.
“When you look at the numbers — the second leading cause of lung cancer overall in the United States — this is an important issue,” said Weld County Commissioner and WCDPHE Coordinator Jason Maxey. “Thank you for this program and for helping ensure that Weld County residents remain safe in their homes.”
WCDPHE provides public education and offers free short-term radon test kits to Weld County residents (one per household, while supplies last). More information about testing and mitigation and how to request a testing kit can be found at www.weld.gov/go/radon.
