Weld County Road 77 reopens nearly a month ahead of schedule

Four months of work ended last Thursday when Weld County Road (WCR) 77 between WCR 114 and WCR 122 reopened to traffic. The four-mile stretch of road, located north of Briggsdale, is the fourth segment of WCR 77 improved in as many years. Approximately 16 miles have been improved since 2023.

“We greatly appreciate everyone’s patience as we’ve worked to continually improve this road over the last few years,” said Kevin Ross, Weld County Commissioner and Coordinator of the Weld County Department of Public Works. “This road is an important one in northern Weld County and heavily used by residents, members of the oil and gas community, and members of our agricultural  industry. It’s great to see it improved so that it can continue to safely and efficiently meet demand.”

Much of the work on this portion of WCR 77 focused on strengthening the road’s structure. The Weld County Department of Public Works rebuilt the road using both aggregate base course and a cement-treated base. Both of these components  have been used previously on other segments of WCR 77 to help the road be more resistant to cracking from heavy traffic or the effects of freeze-thaw.

While the focus was on strengthening the road’s structure — evidenced by more than 14,000 tons of pavement removed and 32,000 new tons laid in its place — care was also taken in other areas. Twenty-six new signs were placed and 17 acres near the road were seeded and mulched.

This phase of work on WCR 77 was completed nearly a month ahead of the Sept. 30 deadline, reflecting public works goal of finishing projects on time and on budget.

“This project, not only this year but in years past, speaks to the talent, drive, and dedication of our Public Works Department,” said Scott James, Weld County Commissioner Chair.  “The amount of work they do and how quickly they can get it done shows their commitment to working as efficiently as possible.”

This completed phase of construction on WCR 77 will be the last for a few years. Public works wants to give nearby residents a break from construction and focus on other projects in the county.
