Weld County launches first-ever Citizens’ Academy

Weld County Government is proud to launch its first-ever citizens’ academy. This five-week academy will offer residents the opportunity to learn about county programs and initiatives directly from department directors as well as better understand how county tax dollars are used to provide services to Weld County residents.

“This is a great opportunity to build a connection with county residents,” said Weld County Commissioner Chair, Scott James. “We know there are questions, and even some confusion, about what county government does, and how county government’s roll is different from municipal government’s role, so we are excited to bring this program to residents.”

The academy, which will meet Tuesday nights from 6 to 8 p.m. at the county administration building in Greeley, will be open to 20 Weld County residents who are at least 18 years old. The academy will run from Sept. 8 through Oct. 6, 2026.

“For our first academy, we wanted to make sure the attendees had a personal and productive experience, so we are capping it at 20 Weld County residents,” said James. “We want attendees to not only be able to hear from department directors about the work they do but also to be able to ask questions of them and really walk away with a more in-depth understanding of county government.”

Applications will be accepted online from Aug. 10 through Aug. 16. If more than 20 residents apply, the county will randomly select attendees with the goal of including attendees from as many different geographical areas within the county as possible.
