The Weld County Board of County Commissioners has adopted updates to Chapter 29 of the Weld County Code, modernizing building regulations for construction and development in unincorporated Weld County. The changes take effect June 15, 2026.

The updates adopt the latest versions of several nationally recognized building and safety codes, including the 2024 International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, International Energy Conservation Code, and other related standards.

“The update is intended to improve clarity, streamline permitting and inspection processes, and ensure building regulations reflect current construction practices and safety standards,” said Weld County Commissioner and Commissioner Coordinator for the Department of Planning and Development Services, Lynette Peppler.

Key updates include:

  • Updating permit requirements and exemptions for accessory buildings, agricultural buildings, cargo containers, utility structures, and certain oil and gas equipment.
  • Establishing new standards and definitions for manufactured homes, modular homes, mobile homes, and manufactured structures.
  • Requiring engineered foundation designs for most new structures while providing exceptions for certain additions, detached garages, and pole buildings.
  • Clarifying floodplain review requirements before construction can begin in designated flood hazard areas.
  • Adding procedures for re-permitting projects when permits expire before work is completed.
  • Requiring zoning compliance reviews before building permits are issued.
  • Incorporating Colorado's model electric- and solar-ready building requirements as part of the county's energy code.

Residents, contractors, developers, and design professionals are encouraged to review the updated requirements before beginning new construction projects.
