Weld County Road 54 improvement

This project is anticipated to begin the spring/summer of 2027, following construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Weld County Road 54 and 13. We'll keep you in the know with a monthly newsletter update until the project begins. Once it kicks off, expect regular newsletter updates highlighting project progress and detours along with pictures.

Also known as Freedom Parkway, Weld County Road (WCR) 54 has seen a substantial increase in traffic as Weld County continues to grow rapidly. This surge has led to safety concerns, increased congestion, and a greater need for infrastructure improvements to support the evolving demands of this corridor.

To address safety improvements and connectivity needs, the Weld County Department of Public Works hired Benesch to improve a section of WCR 54.

Project breakdown and timeline

  • The project will focus on expanding a four-mile section of Weld County Road 54 from a two-lane paved section with minimal shoulders to an interim two-lane concrete road. A typical roadway section will include one, 12-foot travel lane in each direction with an asphalt, 18-foot continuous turn lane in the middle of the road. The 8-foot shoulders will include 6 feet paved and 2 feet gravel.

When this project is initially complete, turns will be permitted from the center lane. At some point in the future, this center median area will be raised and turns will be prohibited.

  • After the roundabout at the intersection of WCR 54 and WCR 13 is completed (estimated spring or summer 2027), work will begin on improvements to WCR 54 between WCR 13 and CO 257. These improvements are anticipated to be completed in spring 2029.
