Treasurer Frequently Asked Questions

General

Q: When should I receive my tax notice?

  • Property Tax Notices are generally mailed by the end of January or early February to the owner of record, as their name and mailing address is listed on the Tax Roll as of January 1st. The Tax Roll is prepared and maintained by the County Assessor. Failure to receive a property tax notice does not exempt the taxpayer from timely payment of taxes due (State Statute C.R.S 39-10-103).
  • If you have not received a tax notice by mid February, please contact our office at (970) 400-3290 and we will mail you a duplicate notice. You can also print a duplicate notice online at www.weldtax.com.

Q: How are the taxes determined on my property?

  • Property taxes are the result of the assessment process and the total mill levies for the taxing authorities that provide public services to that property. The County Assessor establishes the value of all properties for tax purposes. The taxing authorities use the assessed value to determine their mill levies. A mill is 1/10th of a penny or $1 for each $1,000 of assessed valuation. Information concerning the tax levy can be obtained by contacting the governing boards of the various taxing entities. (Authority Contact Information)

Q: What programs are there to help with my tax burden?

  • Yes, there is a Tax Deferral (delay) Program available to senior citizens, military, or taxpayers eligible property tax growth cap of 4%. For more information, please visit Colorado Tax Deferral or call 303-866-3947.
  • The Senior Citizen Homestead Exemption is another program available for seniors. For more information please visit Weld County Assessor.

Why am I being mailed my property tax notice when I have an escrow account with my mortgage company?

  • Per Colorado Revised Statutes § 39-10-103 (1) (a), the Treasurer's Office is required to mail or send electronic notice of the annual property tax notice to the owner. If you have a mortgage company, with an escrow account, they will receive an electronic notice of taxes due.
