Weld County’s Department of Public Health and Environment is hosting two upcoming sessions through the Strengthening Families Program (SFP 10–14) this October.

The program is a proven, evidence-based series designed to help families build stronger relationships, improve communication, and support healthy youth development. This seven-week program features weekly two-hour sessions where parents and youth first meet separately for skill-building activities, then come together for engaging family sessions to reinforce learning, practice problem-solving, and grow closer as a family.

A research study conducted by the Partnerships and Prevention Science Institute found that for every $1 spent on SFP 10-14, communities see a return of $9.60 in long-term benefits — lower future costs in areas like criminal justice, social services, and healthcare and increased productivity and better outcomes in education and employment. In Weld County, funding for the program is provided by the Weld County Health Department and various grants so families can participate at no cost. Similar findings come from a cost benefit analysis conducted by the Washington State Institute for Public Policy which estimated SFP 10-14 generates approximately $5,923 in savings per youth. This means the savings to the community outweigh the cost of running the program. These savings are shown in youth having reduced involvement in the criminal justice system, fewer special education needs, lower health care costs, decreased alcohol use, and higher future earnings.
