Federal funding to further airport improvements

Efforts to enhance the Greeley-Weld County Airport as a major transportation hub in the region continued last week when U.S. Congressman Gabe Evans announced $3.5 million in federal funding had been awarded to the airport. It’s money that will be utilized to build additional airport taxiways.
“We’re so honored to receive this funding and continue developing this airport into a place beneficial to travelers that can better serve northern Colorado and the region,” said Cooper Anderson, Greeley-Weld County Airport Director. “A major project like this doesn’t just happen. It takes a commitment from leadership, and this federal funding reflects that.”
A hangar under construction on the northeast side of the airport is one example of the continued work fostered by planning and the local and federal funding that’s fueled the airport’s expansion. It’s funding that began in 2024, when Weld County and the City of Greeley each pledged $5 million toward airport improvements, money that has helped construct a taxiway and taxilane as well as additional roads to connect people to hangars, including the one currently being built. Last year, three Federal Aviation Administration grants totaling more than $1.2 million were used to complete the Echo and Bravo Taxiway Complex and a major ramp reconstruction project.
Weld County Commissioner Kevin Ross, Chair of the Greeley-Weld County Airport Authority, said the latest federal funding to build additional taxiways speaks to the effectiveness of partnerships in turning a vision into reality.
“This airport is a gold mine. It’s a diamond in the rough, and we’re excited about its growth,” Ross said, thanking Evans and speaking to the impact of funding efforts over the last few years between Weld County, Greeley and at the federal level. “It shows our commitment to completing these projects and continuing the airport’s growth. So, we can’t thank you enough for your help in helping Weld County continue to make this airport a success.”
Evans, who represents Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, said the improvements made, as well as those yet to come, offer Weld County residents plenty to get excited about.
“It’s going to bring jobs to Weld County, and help the economy,” Evans said. “It’s also going to benefit the entire Front Range by helping relieve some of that heavily congested traffic north and east of the Denver metro area. … Weld County and this area is going to benefit from all of those jobs (created).”
