Redistricting

On June 30, 2025, the Weld County Redistricting Advisory Committee presented three redistricting map options for the Redistricting Commission to consider for adoption.

Redistricting is the process of reviewing county commissioner district boundaries to ensure they comply with state law and the Weld County Home Rule Charter. Under Colorado Revised Statutes (30-10-306 through 30-10-306.4), boundaries for county commissioner districts must be redrawn based on data from the most recent United States Census.

The Redistricting Advisory Committee, which was made of up of nine Weld County residents, presented the maps to the commission during the Monday, June 30, Weld County Commissioner meeting. Now, the Redistricting Commission will hold three public hearings to gather public comment on the proposed maps prior to a final approval of one map on July 30.

The Redistricting Advisory Committee and the Redistricting Commission are subject to the same anti-bribery and abuse of public office provisions, open meeting, and open record requirements as other elected officials. They are also strictly prohibited from having any communication with duly appointed support staff regarding the content or development of any plan outside of public hearings.

One or more staff members also may be designated to communicate with both members of the Redistricting Advisory Committee and the duly appointed designated staff regarding only administrative matters. The definition and scope of such administrative matters will be determined by the Redistricting Advisory Committee.

The Redistricting Advisory Committee will follow specific criteria for developing the updated district maps.

Factors the Redistricting Commission and Advisory Committee are required to consider include:

  • Population equality between districts
  • Compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act, 52 USC 10301 et seq.
  • Keeping communities of interest and political subdivisions in the same district
  • Geographical compactness of districts
  • Political competitiveness of districts

Can the public participate in the redistricting process?
